From Australia to Boston, Berlin, Belfast and Milan, The Rumjacks have built a Celtic punk identity that crosses borders.
The Rumjacks began in New South Wales, Australia, in 2008, but the band's story has since developed into an international one. Its members now live across Boston, Berlin, Belfast and Milan, coming together regularly to tour and record.
That geographical spread is reflected in the character of their music, which brings together punk rock energy with Celtic folk traditions and stories shaped by history, migration and personal experience.
From Australia to an International Celtic Punk Sound
The band's sixth album, Dead Anthems, was recorded in Asbury Park, New Jersey, and released in February 2025. The record was produced by frontman Mike Rivkees, engineered by Pete Steinkopf of The Bouncing Souls and mixed by Kevin Bivona of The Interrupters.
Its songs explore different sides of the band's influences and experiences.
The lead single, Come Hell Or High Water, draws on Rivkees' family history and the experience of earlier generations who were forced to leave their native countries. The song considers how those journeys shaped the lives of descendants who followed.
Elsewhere, Cold Like This features Ken Casey of Dropkick Murphys. The song takes the form of a sea shanty and was inspired by a walk home from a Boston bar in freezing conditions, with a reported windchill of -20F.
Music, Memory and Influence
Dead Anthems also reflects the influence of artists who helped shape the wider Celtic punk tradition.
Some Legends Never Die pays tribute to Shane MacGowan of The Pogues. The song recognises his influence on generations of songwriters and his contribution to a style of music that allowed personal experiences to be expressed through poetic, dark and raw storytelling.
For The Rumjacks, those influences sit alongside their own experiences and the very different places in which the band members now live.
Their music has therefore developed beyond a single geographical identity. While their beginnings are firmly rooted in Australia, their current story is shaped by a band that moves between countries, musical traditions and cultural influences.
